We might see faster Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 phones later this year

Samsung’s flagship series of phones, the Galaxy S23 lineup, are all powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2. On paper it seems that this is similar to other flagship phones that launched in 2023, but did you know that Samsung actually has an exclusive version that features a faster clock speed?

Turns out that this exclusivity is coming to an end soon. This is according to a report from Digital Chat Station on Weibo where they claim that the so-called “monopoly” that Samsung has on the chipset is over, and that this faster version of the chipset will be making its way to other phones launching in 2023 as well.

For context, the “normal” model of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 features a base clock speed of 3.2GHz and a GPU clock speed of 680MHz. But for Samsung phones, the speeds have been boosted to 3.36GHz and 719MHz respectively. This allows the phones to perform ever-so-slightly better and faster than the competition.

Exactly how this plays out in real-world usage is probably not so clear cut. After all, it depends on what users are trying to do with their phones. If they’re just using it for emails and chatting, then the faster clock speeds probably won’t be as obvious.
