Google’s Pixel phones will soon be able to double as dashcams

Our phones can do many things already, but it seems that Google is planning on introducing a new feature to its Pixel phones where soon, users will be able to use their devices as a dashcam while driving.

This is according to an APK teardown by the folks at 9to5Google who discovered the feature and also managed to test it out for themselves. Some of you might be wondering, how different is this compared to just mounting your phone on your car’s dashboard and just hitting the record button?

For starters, while in dashcam mode, Pixel phones will still be fully functional and users can use other features on their phone even while the dashcam mode has been enabled. Secondly, users don’t have to worry about having to remember to enable the feature. It can be set so that whenever your Pixel device connects to your car’s Bluetooth, recording begins, and recording can also automatically end when it’s been disconnected from your car’s Bluetooth system.

The feature also apparently deletes recorded footage after 3 days so you don’t have to worry about it clogging up your device’s storage. They will also be compressed to about 30MB per minute of recording. It sounds like a pretty cool feature and if you don’t want to spend extra money on a dashcam, then this could be a feature to look forward to. In the meantime, it was also discovered earlier this year that Google was planning a new Android feature that turns phones into webcams.
