While a lot of folks tuned into Google’s I/O developer conference to check out the latest Pixel devices, Google also made several announcements regarding its research and development involving AI, which is consistently being integrated into the company’s many software services.
One such example is Android’s Material You design interface, which made its debut a couple of years ago. According to Google, Android 14 will bring major upgrades for Material You, with regards to UI customization, including new shortcuts and clock widgets, in addition to a new monochrome color theme.
The big highlight of this development however are the arrival of new features which include Emoji Wallpaper, Cinematic Wallpaper, and Generative AI wallpaper. Emoji wallpaper lets users customize phones using different favorite emoji combinations, patterns and colors, while Cinematic wallpaper uses machine learning to transform user photos into layered 3D images. These features are expected to arrive for users next month.
As for Generative AI wallpaper, the feature will work with a user’s prompts that relay descriptive features for their desired image. Using Google’s text-to-image diffusion model, your phone will then generate unique wallpapers, which will work in tandem with Material You for a matching color palette. It’s still under development though, so users will have to wait a bit longer until Fall.
