Google Might Stick with Samsung for the Tensor G3 Chipset

The arrival of Google’s first-party Tensor SoCs was met with an interesting mix of varying reception from Android enthusiasts, industry analysts and end users alike. It was no secret that Google collaborated with Samsung for the development of its Tensor and Tensor G2 chips for the Pixel 6 and 7 series respectively, and it looks like things will be staying the same this year, according to some reports online.

It’s expected that Samsung should begin manufacturing its third-gen 4nm process node during the first half of 2023. While 3nm nodes are currently available, Samsung is expected to continue pushing for 4nm development, after running into issues with its 4nm chip production last year.

Since Google is predicted to launch the Pixel 8 series in Q4 of 2023, it’s very likely that the Tensor G3 chipset will be produced with Samsung’s third-generation 4nm process node. By comparison, other 2023 Pixel devices such as the Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet will run on last year’s Tensor G2, produced using Samsung’s second-generation 4nm node. Additionally, Samsung is planning to manufacture 4nm chips in Texas starting next year.

Starting with the Pixel 6 series, Google moved to equipping all of its phones with Tensor chips, in comparison to older Pixel devices which ran on Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs. This move was questioned by some however, given the relatively “lackluster” performance of Samsung-developed chips such as its Exynos range, especially when compared to rival chipsets from Qualcomm.
