Continuing our coverage for International Women’s Day, we at Phandroid are showcasing some of the most compelling content from around the internet that can engage, empower, and enlighten. Our celebration of this day is driven by the recognition that women have always been an integral part of world history, yet they are often excluded from the narratives that shape it.
This year, Google, in partnership with several other organizations, aims to bridge this gap by showcasing a diverse range of content around these exceptional women. We are excited to bring this to you throughout the week, and we hope you will discover something intriguing and gain insight into the ways in which women have contributed to the many aspects of life we tend to take for granted.
Today, we’re going to be talking about the women in technology who have helped the technical world get to where it is today.
Surfacing Women in the Smithsonian
The Smithsonian and Google Arts & Culture have been working on unearthing a lot of the women in science and technology that may have long been forgotten. The objective of the partnership is to create novel machine learning resources for the curators at the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. These resources will aid the curators in delving into the institution’s archives to bring to light and emphasize the various contributions made by women in the field of science spanning over 174 years of history.
Online Exhibitions
The Smithsonian Institution also has a number of online exhibitions focusing on women and their contributions to technology and the sciences. They have a dedicated section to Women in Science and Innovation, where they have everything from conversation kits to documentary-style videos. There is surely something for everyone regardless of age or experience in tech to enjoy through the use of these well-produced tools.
