Facebook Messenger is now coming back to the Facebook app
Facebook’s intention with Messenger was to turn it into an everyday messenger service similar to other apps like WhatsApp (also owned by Meta), Telegram, LINE, Signal, and so on. To the point where they spun Messenger out of Facebook into its own standalone app, much to the annoyance of users who had to now download and use a separate app.
The good news is that if you do use Messenger from time to time and would have preferred it remaining in the main Facebook app, you’ll be happy to hear that Facebook has listened to users and has now folded Messenger back into the Facebook app itself. According to Facebook’s announcement:
“Today, over 140 billion messages are sent across our apps every day. On Instagram, people already reshare Reels nearly 1 billion times daily through DMs and on Facebook we see private sharing of Reels growing strongly as well. We are testing the ability for people to access their Messenger inbox within the Facebook app and you’ll see us expand this testing soon.”
As per the blog post, it seems that right now Facebook is testing out the changes so not all users might be able to access these changes, but assuming all goes well, you should eventually be able to access your Messenger inbox via the Facebook app. We’re not sure if this means Facebook will kill off the standalone Messenger app, as we have seen them do with other apps in the past, so we’ll have to wait and see.
