Meet the Magic5 Pro, HONOR’s Newest Blockbuster Flagship

HONOR has been busy lately – the former Huawei sub-brand has put a lot of effort towards breaking into the mainstream smartphone landscape, giving consumers an interesting variety of smart devices and computers. More recently, the company has unveiled its newest flagship, the HONOR Magic5 Pro. Formally announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the phone features some of the best hardware that HONOR has to offer.

The Magic5 Pro comes with some seriously-impressive specs, but that raises the question of whether or not these will be enough to take on established players like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 – let’s check it out!

Design & Display

The Magic5 Pro does just enough to set itself apart from competing smartphones, and this is apparent in the phone’s external design. The front is dominated by a 6.81-inch LTPO display featuring a “quad-curve” design with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1312 x 2848 pixel resolution. It gets pretty bright at 1800 nits of maximum brightness, which should be enough for most outdoor scenarios.

The screen is where you’ll also find the front-facing camera set-up, which is contained in a pill cut-out set in the upper left corner of the display.

The sides of the phone feature a polished frame, which wraps around the Magic5 Pro’s IP68-certified chassis. The back comes with a nicely-textured design, which is just enough to add a bit of grip when handling the device. The rear panel houses the triple-lens camera, neatly arranged in a circular island not unlike the OnePlus 11, albeit more centered than the latter.

The phone also features a dual-speaker set-up, and the bottom side of the frame houses a USB-C charging port alongside a speaker grille. The right-hand side meanwhile is where you’ll find the volume and power buttons. The fingerprint scanner is located within the display, which contains additional biometrics such as 3D face scanning.

Internals & Software

Powering the Magic5 Pro is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, paired with an Adreno 740 GPU. The phone should be more than able to handle daily tasks thanks to the 12GB of RAM inside the device, which is coupled with 512GB of internal storage where you can save a ton of photos, videos, and music.

The phone runs on a massive 5100 mAh battery, which comes with support for 66W wired fast charging, and 50W wireless charging, which out-perform other brands in terms of charging speeds. The phone will ship with the latest Android 13 OS, although it will come with Honor’s MagicOS 7.1, which comes with a suite of HONOR-exclusive apps and software add-ons.

Cameras

The triple-camera set-up on the rear panel includes a 50MP Wide Camera with f/1.6 aperture, as well as customized 1/1.12 inch sensor. This is accompanied by a 50MP Ultra Wide Camera with f/2.0 aperture, and a 50MP Sony IMX858 Sensor Telephoto Camera with f/3.0 aperture, 3.5x Optical Zoom, and 100x Digital Zoom. The main camera will be able to record 4K video at up to 60fps and HDR 10+.

The front camera meanwhile will feature a fixed-focus 12MP lens with f/2.4 aperture alongside the 3D Depth Camera which will also function as a biometric scanner for 3D face unlock. 3D face unlock is something not usually seen in a lot of Android phones, and it’s certainly nice to see the feature here.

As for availability, the HONOR Magic5 Pro will be available in Black and Meadow Green, starting in Q2 2023.
