Back in the days of the Google Nexus phones, Google would load a vanilla version of Android on these devices, giving users a pure and unadulterated version of Android. With Google’s Pixel devices, Google has switched up their strategy to include features that would showcase their vision of Android, so it’s not exactly vanilla.
For the most part it’s still a lot better than some of the overly bloated software that some handset makers like to use on their devices, but in case it’s not what you want in an operating system, you’re in luck. This is because the team behind the third-party LineageOS ROM has updated the platform where it will now support Google’s newer Pixel phones.
This includes devices like the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 7, which is fantastic because prior to this, LineageOS did not support Pixel phones that ran on the Tensor chipset, which is what the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 are using. Now with this update, the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro are supported.
Presumably when the Pixel 7a and Pixel 8 are released they will also be supported as well, but we won’t know how long it will take for the team to add support for these devices. In any case, if you’d like to explore an alternative version of Android to the one loaded on your Pixel 6 and Pixel 7, then LineageOS might be one worth checking out.
