When you buy a gadget these days, there’s a good chance that it might not necessarily be supported for as long as you might like. For example, our phones are usually supported for about 3-5 years depending on the model and manufacturer.
In the case of security cameras, if you happen to own an older Arlo model, you might want to check your email. This is because Arlo has sent out an email announcing a new “End-of-Life” policy that will be coming into effect on the 1st of January, 2023, but not to worry as the first couple of cameras that will be affected will only see these changes in April 2023, and more are expected to be added to the list in January 2024.
According to this new policy, basically it means that Arlo will be killing off support for seven-day cloud storage, firmware updates, and email notifications, and will no longer issue bug fixes, security patches, and spare parts in the event you might need to fix it.
The cameras that will be affected in April 2023 include the Arlo VMC3030 Gen 3 which originally launched in 2014, and the Arlo VMC4030 Pro, which launched in 2016, which means that the company has actually been supporting it for about 7-8 years, which honestly isn’t too bad.
Keep in mind that the cameras will continue to work, but killing off access to cloud storage means that you will no longer be able to access your footage from anywhere. You can still opt to store it locally, but it won’t be as convenient as it used to be.
