In the past, it used to be that apps would do one thing and one thing only, but over the years we’ve started to see the rise of “super apps”. For those unfamiliar, these are apps like Tencent’s WeChat platform.
While known as a messaging app, WeChat is widely used in China for all sorts of things in addition to chatting, such as shopping, sending money, and so on. Now according to a report from The Information, this is apparently something Microsoft is very interested in as the company is reportedly building their own super app.
The goal of this app is to push the Bing brand to the forefront while covering other Microsoft products and services like Teams and Outlook. Microsoft is also hoping that its super app will be able to convince users who largely rely on Apple and Google to use Microsoft’s own services, like Bing search and more.
It’s a very interesting idea and almost feels like web portals in the early days of the internet, where search engines like Yahoo, Lycos, Alta Visa provided users with a ton of other services on its website in addition to search. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything yet so maybe it’s a good idea to take it with a grain of salt, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it were true as it could be Microsoft’s way of further integrating themselves into the mobile space.
