Samsung’s self-repair program might soon be extended to more devices

With the right-to-repair movement going strong, it has prompted companies such as Samsung to launch their own self-repair programs where customers can get access to the tools, components, and manuals so that they can perform their own repairs if they wish, or allow third-party repair shops to perform repairs using genuine components.

At the moment the program only covers the company’s smartphones, but according to a trademark application filed in the EU, it seems that Samsung could be considering extending the program to cover more devices like smartwatches and earbuds. It has also been suggested that Samsung could be working on a mobile app that will help guide users through the process.

It’s interesting if Samsung were to extend this program to cover non-smartphone devices. One of the gripes many people have with regards to smaller devices like earbuds is that it isn’t as easy to repair as a smartphone, which usually means that when it’s spoilt, users end up buying a new model instead of fixing the old one.

If the self-repair program really extends to wearables and earbuds, it could go a long way in helping Samsung’s green efforts, while allowing users to get more life out of their devices. Note that Samsung hasn’t announced anything yet, and it is possible the wording in the trademark application was just to cover their bases, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
