Corning unveils new Gorillas Glass Victus 2 for smartphones
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is the glass cover that is used in many smartphones. The company introduced its Victus series a couple of years ago which promised things like being able to survive drops of up to 2 meters, and now Corning is back with a newer model, the Victus 2, that they’re promising even greater durability.
According to Corning, they claim to have designed the Victus 2 to be able to survive drops from waist height onto rougher surfaces, which doesn’t sound like much, but as Corning notes, smartphones these days are heavier and larger, which means that the impact they make when they hit the ground is stronger. This also means that the glass used needs to be more durable than ever.
“In lab testing, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 survived drops of up to one meter on a surface replicating concrete. Victus 2 continued to survive drops up to two meters on a surface replicating asphalt and maintained scratch resistance up to four times better than competitive aluminosilicate.”
It will be interesting to see how Corning’s claims will hold up in real-world testing, and we probably won’t have to wait too long to find out. There is a good chance that we will see phones launching in 2023 that will be utilizing this new glass, so we should find out soon enough how much more durable the Victus 2 is compared to its predecessor.
