Google’s new Gmail interface is here to stay

As most Gmail users are probably aware by now, Google has introduced a new interface to the email platform earlier this year. Google did give users the choice of reverting back to the older UI if they wanted, but now it looks like the company is taking away that option from users starting this month.

“The integrated view with Gmail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet on the left side of the window will also become standard for users who have turned on Chat. Through quick settings, you can customize this new interface to include the apps most important to you, whether it’s Gmail by itself or a combination of Gmail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet. This makes it easier to stay on top of what’s important and reduces the need to switch between various applications, windows, or tabs. With Chat now available on the left, users will no longer have the option to configure Chat on the right side of Gmail.”

We suppose to be fair to Google, having to maintain two separate UIs is a bit of a waste of resources, plus it also means that the experience that users have will be inconsistent across the board.

For users who have been using the new Gmail interface for a while already, then these changes won’t matter as much. For those who have been holding out and still sticking to the older UI, it looks like it might be time to switch over to the new interface and give yourself some time to get used to it.
