Google testing end-to-end encryption for Messages

End-to-end encryption is something that we’re finding on a lot of messenger platforms these days, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Google could be bringing something similar to Google Messages.

Google has been trying to revolutionize the messaging industry with the RCS protocol and Google Messages is the platform that the company is using to showcase the tech. In a post on Reddit, one user was in a group chat and received a message that was labeled as being encrypted.

What’s interesting is that this chat consisted of users who were a mix of both Google and Samsung Messages users, which means that regardless of the phone brand/model, as long as RCS messages are being used, it should be encrypted.

Google did previously confirm that end-to-end encryption would be coming to Messages earlier this year, so if this Reddit post is any indication, it looks like it’s definitely being worked on. As 9to5Google has noted however, the catch is that all participants will need to have encryption enabled if they want true encryption.

We’re not sure if this is going to be enabled by default or if users will have to opt-in for it. Either way, if you’re a proponent for RCS, then this is a security and privacy feature you can look forward to.
