Cover Screen Customization

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 cover screen provides a lot of functionalities. The good thing is it can be given a distinctive look through customization like background image and text color. It can also be customized by selecting a clock style from all the available choices. Visit Settings > Cover Screen > Clock Style and choose the one that suits your preference and style.

Cover Screen Widgets

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 Cover screen has widgets just like we have them on a phone’s home screen. You can check information quickly instead of flipping open the phone every time. Open Settings > Clock Screen > Widgets to get a list of available widgets. Each widget has a toggle that you can turn on/off to enable or disable. There is Reorder option in the top right corner which lets you arrange widgets in your preferred order.

Start timer from Cover Screen

A timer is something you may need to start anytime and it can be annoying if you have to flip open the phone every time just to do that. This is why Samsung allows you to start a timer directly from the Cover Screen. All you need to do is to enable the timer widget.

Visit Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets and turn on the toggle for the timer. Now, reorder the timer widget to place it at your preferred number so that you access it quickly. To start a timer, double-tap the cover screen and swipe left until you see the timer widget.

Cover screen preview

When clicking photos of others using the rear camera, the usual situation is them being unhappy about the frame or their pose. This can be avoided on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with the cover screen preview functionality. It basically shows the preview of the photo to the person behind the camera through the cover screen. This way, you can be sure you are clicking the photo exactly the way they want it to be. It can be used by tapping the cover screen preview icon in the top right corner of the camera app.

Cover screen as a selfie camera

Cover screen on your Galaxy Z Flip 4 can also double up as a selfie camera screen. This will save you from the hassle of opening your phone every time you want to capture a selfie or record a video. You need to tap twice on the fingerprint scanner/power button to enter this mode. Once you see the camera viewfinder, you can swipe left to access all the camera modes. Tapping again on the fingerprint scanner will turn off the camera mode.

Get a case

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is relatively cheaper but not exactly affordable. It costs in the range of $1,000 which means you better protect it with a good case. Samsung’s official cases for the phone cost between $24.99 and $89.99 but they may be out of stock at times. They may also be quite expensive for some buyers which is why you should have a look at third-party Galaxy Z Flip 4 cases online as well as offline. Here are some that we recommend:

Get a charger

Samsung does not ship the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with a charger. The foldable does support 25W fast charging, Adaptive Fast charging, and even 10W wireless charging. It means if you want to charge your new foldable at its maximum supported speeds, you need to get a compatible fast charger. The official 25W charger is priced at $19.99 but if you want to try a third-party option, here are some of the suggestions:

Flex Mode

One of the USPs of owning a Galaxy Z Flip 4 is that you can use it in different modes. One such mode is Flex Mode which splits the app into two halves where each half serves a different purpose. It usually shows the app in the top half and its controls in the bottom half. It can be enabled by Settings > Advanced Features > Labs > Flex Mode Panel. You can then choose the apps you want to use with Flex Mode.

Split Mode

Split mode is one of the features which makes Android smartphones better at multitasking than iPhones. You can use two different apps at the same time by splitting them into halves. It can be useful in various scenarios like reading an article like this and taking notes at the same time without having to switch between your browser and the notes app.

Visit Settings > Advanced Settings > Labs and enable the toggle for Full screen in split screen view. You should also turn on the toggle for swipe for split screen. You can now swipe up from the bottom with two fingers to enter the split mode.

Dark Mode

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a dark mode like any other modern smartphone out there. It is helpful while using the phone in dark or low-light situations but can also be used all the time for preserving battery life.

You need to visit Settings > Display > Dark Mode to turn it on. If you want it to be enabled only for a particular window, you can create a custom schedule. There is also a Sunset to sunrise where the mode will turn on at the time of sunset and will turn off at sunrise.

Utilize the ecosystem

If you are someone who not only has Galaxy Z Flip 4 but also a Samsung tablet and/or a Galaxy wearable, it would make sense to utilize the whole ecosystem. You need to open Settings > Advanced Features and enable two toggles: Call & text on other devices and Continue apps on other devices.

The first option will allow you to attend calls and texts even from a tablet or your wearable. Similarly, the second option will let you continue using certain apps on other devices.

Speed dial contacts

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 gives you the functionality of quickly calling someone without having to unflip the phone. This can be done from the Cover Screen. You need to visit the Cover Screen settings and choose the Direct Dial option. The next step is to select contacts you want to add to quick dial. Once you do this, double tap on the cover screen and swipe left.

Samsung Wallet

Samsung Wallet makes it a lot more convenient to pay for items while checking out. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 lets you use it directly from the cover screen. You need to wake up the phone and swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This will make your default payment card show up. Now, hold the phone’s back up to a payment terminal and wait until the transaction is complete.

If you wish to make a payment using a card other than the default one, swipe on the screen once your default card appears. Authenticate the card you want to use by touching the fingerprint scanner.

Motion Photo

Motion Photo is Samsung’s answer to Live Photo available on iPhone. It is a feature that captures a short clip at the same you click a photo. This gives you an opportunity to look back at the moments that led to that particular shot. This can be enabled by tapping the Motion Photo icon next to the aspect ratio icon at the top of the camera app.

Switch from navigation buttons to gestures

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 shows classic navigation buttons at the bottom by default but that does not mean you have to use them. You can switch to gesture-based navigation anytime. You need to go to Settings > Display > Navigation Bar > Gestures. You will now be able to access recent apps, go back, and go to the home screen using swipe gestures.

Scene Optimizer

If you are someone who does not want to spend time tweaking camera settings before clicking a photo or editing photos after, Samsung has a setting that can do the ‘hard work’ on your behalf. It is called Scene Optimizer which auto-boosts the colors of a photo based on the scene.

Open the camera app and tap the Settings icon in the top left corner. Look for Scene Optimizer and enable the toggle. Now, the only thing you need to do is to keep the subject in the frame and shoot the photo. You should get an Insta-ready photo right away.

Smart Widget

There is no doubt that widgets are cool and provide a lot of conveniences. However, they can make the home screen look cluttered if you add too many of them. This is why Samsung has offered a widget called Smart Widget with the Galaxy Z Flip 4. It basically stacks multiple widgets over one another so that you can save valuable space on the home screen.

Tap and hold on empty space on the home screen and choose Widgets. Look for Smart Widget in the list and select your preferred size. Add it to the home screen and choose the apps/actions for which you want to stack widgets.

Charging Information

Samsung has a feature that shows you the estimated time it will take to charge the phone fully. It is available on many other phones too but in the case of Galaxy Z Flip 4, you need to enable it manually. This can be done by visiting Settings > Display > Show charging information. It will also show you the current battery percentage.

Flip the phone to answer calls

There is no doubt that flip phones are the inspiration behind Galaxy Z Flip 4 design. One of the coolest things about those flip phones was the ability to answer/end phone calls by flipping the phone. This can be enabled on the foldable by opening the Phone app and tapping the three-dot icon in the right corner. Next up, select Settings > Answering and ending calls > Open phone to answer. Turn on the toggle and you are done.

Screenshot Gesture

Physical key combinations are always there to capture a screenshot but why use them every time when you can use a gesture? You need to visit Settings > Advanced Settings > Motions and Gestures and enable the Palm swipe to capture toggle. Now, you can take a screenshot by simply swiping through your palm’s edge from left to right.

Swipe down for notifications

It can be a little inconvenient to access the notification panel when you are using Galaxy Z Flip 4 unfolded, especially with a single hand. This is because it is actually a tall phone. But you can avoid this by enabling the swipe-down gesture on the fingerprint scanner.

Visit Advanced Settings > Motion and Gestures > Open Notification Panel. You can access the notification panel by simply swiping down the fingerprint scanner.

Get back the Power menu

The side key on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is mapped to the Bixby assistant by default. It means if you will press and hold the button, it will trigger Bixby instead of showing the power menu. This is something not everyone wants but the good thing is you can change it. You need to visit Settings > Advanced Features > Side Key > Press and Hold > Power off menu and that is it. You can now power off or restart your phone like a normal person.
