Netflix isn’t doing so well at the moment. For the first time in a very long time, the company is actually losing subscribers, but to a certain extent this was expected. Many competing streaming services have launched in the past few years, so to see subscribers jump ship shouldn’t be surprising.
To combat the bleed of subscribers, Netflix confirmed that they would be launching an ad-supported tier and now it looks like we have a date and price to look forward to. According to Netflix, the ad-supported tier, also known as Basic with Ads, will be launching on the 3rd of November and will be priced at $6.99 a month.
The countries that it will be available at launch include Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US, and presumably it could roll out to more countries later on. Videos will be streamed at a max of 720p resolution, and Netflix states that users can expect 4-5 minutes of ads per hour, with ads either being 15 or 30 seconds in length.
We did hear previously that there could be some limitations, such as not being able to save videos for offline viewing, some TV shows or movies not being available, and so on. The price of $6.99 is also an interesting one as it makes it cheaper compared to other rival services like Disney+, but whether or not users are willing to pay a slightly lesser fee and put up with ads remains to be seen.
