MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chip - 2

MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1080 chipset will bring hi-res cameras to budget phones

One of the hallmarks of flagship phones is that they use powerful chipsets. These chipsets obviously affect the overall performance of the phone, but it also facilitates the use of higher-end components, like cameras, where there will be support for 4K video, higher-resolution sensors, and so on.

Obviously not everyone can afford or wants a flagship phone, but the good news is that if you typically buy lower-end smartphones, then you might want to keep an eye out for those that use MediaTek’s latest chipset – the Dimensity 1080.

This chipset is essentially an upgrade over its predecessor, the Dimensity 920, and it does share certain features with the previous model. For example, the CPU is still an octa-core CPU that features two ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and is accompanied by six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz, but that’s where the similarities kind of end.

The new Dimensity 1080 will actually feature an upgraded GPU in the form of the Mali-G68 MC4. Thanks to the new GPU, there will be support for higher-resolution camera sensors, up to 200MP, as well as 120Hz displays, Bluetooth 5.2, 5G, and WiFi 6. This means that in the future, we can expect to see more budget handsets come with features that would otherwise typically be found in more expensive flagships.

According to MediaTek, the new Dimensity 1080 chipset is expected to be available in Q4 2022, so if you’re looking for a new budget handset, you should be able to find some models powered by this chipset by the end of the year.
