Xiaomi 12 Review Charging

Here’s hoping Android phones will adopt this green iOS 16 feature soon

So it isn’t uncommon for phone makers these days to tout how green their phones are, and by that we mean environmentally friendly. We’re talking about packaging that might use recycled paper/cardboard, hardware components that are made out of sustainable materials or recycled components, and so on.

But what about on the software front? With the launch of iOS 16 today, one of the features Apple revealed that they did not previously is something called “Clean Energy Charging”. According to Apple, the idea is that it will help optimize charging for when the power grid is less busy.

“Clean Energy Charging aims to decrease the carbon footprint of the iPhone by optimizing charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources.”

The feature isn’t live yet and is expected to arrive in a future update, but it sounds quite interesting, and one that we hope that Google or other Android handset makers could adopt in their phones in the future.

While our phones themselves do not necessarily draw that much power compared to something like a fridge, the fact that millions of people in the US alone charge their phones daily, it adds up. Plus, it could also be a useful way for people who utilize solar charging at home to draw from their energy storage and make use of it instead of drawing from the grid.

At the moment, the feature will only be available in the US when it launches, but hopefully it will expand to other countries in the future.
