It’s been nearly three years now since the debut of Mario Kart Tour on mobile gaming platforms, and the game has undergone some changes since. As such, fans of Nintendo’s mobile spin-off title are in for a treat – the team behind Mario Kart Tour recently made some major changes, which was announced online via the game’s official Twitter account.
Here's a peek at #MarioKartTour's update coming late September! Battle mode will be added, along with a Spotlight Shop, where you can exchange rubies for drivers, karts, and gliders! Also, pipes you can fire by using rubies will be removed. See the notification for details. pic.twitter.com/brsI1tH8YD

More specifically, Mario Kart Tour will now be removing its “Gacha” mechanic (similar to loot boxes), and players will no longer be able to spend their rubies to summon random characters through pipes. With that being said though, the game’s main free-to-play pricing system will still take effect. The game will now add online “Battle Mode” as well, a multiplayer feature that was present in the main-line Mario Kart games. No release date for the feature was announced though, but it’s expected to land sometime during September.
It’s rather interesting to see Mario Kart Tour slowly adopting more features from the console games. A while back, the game received a DLC track which was initially announced for Mario Kart 8 on the Switch. With that said, it’s not all surprising if Nintendo decides to bring over more “traditional” console gameplay elements to the mobile racer.
