Just last month, ASUS officially announced their latest gaming smartphone in the form of the ASUS ROG Phone 6 series, but it appears that the company isn’t quite done for the year just yet. According to a countdown page on the ASUS website, ASUS has another gaming smartphone that they will be announcing on the 19th of September, 2022.
According to the event invite, the phone in question will be the ROG Phone 6D, so this won’t be a replacement of the current lineup, but it will be another variant. Not much is known about the ROG Phone 6D, but there is a chance that this could end up being a budget variant of the ROG Phone 6.
For context, the base ROG Phone 6 is priced at £899, while the Pro model with more RAM is going for £1,099, so we expect that the ROG Phone 6D will be priced lower than £899. So what does the potentially lower price tag mean? Presumably some of the hardware might be swapped out for something more affordable.
The reports are claiming that instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, ASUS might instead turn to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000+. While the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 series has gotten some pretty good reviews, suffice to say that Qualcomm is a much more mainstream brand that has a very proven track record over the years.
We’ll definitely need to take the phone for a spin to see if the difference in chipsets will be very noticeable, but if it results in a cheaper and more affordable phone, we don’t really see the downside.
