For those unfamiliar, YouTube Shorts are YouTube’s answer to TikTok. It is primarily viewed on mobile devices, but that could change soon. According to a report from Protocol, a mock-up slide presentation during Google’s partner event has revealed that Google is getting ready to bring YouTube Shorts onto smart TVs.
This means that in the future, users will be able to view YouTube Shorts in the comfort of their living room on their TV, instead of having to scroll on their phone. As Protocol points out, this actually gives YouTube an advantage over TikTok.
While TikTok has its own smart TV app, YouTube has an advantage over TikTok because YouTube is more or less installed on all smart TVs regardless of the platform the TV manufacturer has chosen. This is versus TikTok where users will need to actively seek out the TikTok app, meaning that it’s an additional step that users have to take.
We imagine that there are probably also users who do not realize that TikTok could be available for their smart TVs as well. This means that on the TV front, YouTube Shorts could potentially be getting more eyeballs than TikTok, which could also translate into more mobile views as users might want to keep watching on their phones.
There is no mention of when Google plans on rolling out this feature, but it might be something that users can look forward to in the future.
