Motorola Edge (2022) puts its predecessor to shame

Roughly a year after we got our hands on the Motorola Edge (2021), the company has unveiled its predecessor — the new Motorola Edge (2022). Besides the name (I’m still not sure why Moto insists on not numbering their device releases), the new Motorola Edge is a far superior smartphone in terms of design, specs and price when compared to last year’s model.

The 2021 Edge felt like a dud when it was announced. The phone’s specs and performance were decent for a mid-range device, but Motorola’s $699 price point made it a had device to recommend. Things are a bit different with this year’s Motorola Edge. For starters, the device is one of the first to launch with MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1050 chipset. While some may be disappointed that Moto has switched from Qualcomm, the new MediaTek 1050 delivers better performance than the Snapdragong 778G while also including 5G on sub 6Ghz and mmWave in addition to C-band spectrum support. As you might expect, that means T-Mobile and AT&T will be offering the phone to their customer as well rather than it being a Verizon exclusive.

Other specs include 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, a 6.6-inch FHD OLED display with 10-bit color depth and a 144Hz refresh rate, a 5,000 mAh battery, 30W fast charging, 15W wireless charging and reverse power share at 5W. For its camera setup, the new Edge is getting upgrades all around with the same 50MP primary camera as we say on this year’s Edge+, a new 13MP ultrawide camera with an autofocus lens which allows it to double as a macro camera and a depth sensor for portrait shots. The selfie camera is using the same 32MP sensor as last year’s device.

While the phone may not seem that exciting, it definitely fills the gap in Motorola’s lineup, giving them a solid device that is well-positioned between its G-series devices on the low end and the overpriced Motorola Edge+. Its biggest competition will definitely be the Pixel 6a and the Galaxy A53 from Samsung — both of which are $50 cheaper. Thankfully, Motorola is known for offering discounts on its phones, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the phone getting $50 to $100 discounts from time to time.

T-Mobile will be the first to offer the Motoroal Edge (2022) to its customers in the coming weeks for $498 or completely free if you add a new line. Availability on Verizon and AT&T will be coming shortly after that, but you will also be able to pick up the phone unlocked from Best Buy and Motorola.com as well.
