A decade after the launch of Google Play back in 2012, Google recently celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its digital distribution platform, highlighting several major milestones throughout the service’s history. Google also debuted a new logo for the platform, matching the brand uniformity of its other software services.
As per the company’s official press statement: “That year, we opened the (digital) doors of Google Play. A decade later, more than 2.5 billion people in over 190 countries use Google Play every month to discover apps, games, and digital content. And more than 2 million developers work with us to build their businesses and reach people around the globe…”
Google’s highlights for the platform included several key features, such as the introduction of “Google Play Pass,” “Google Play Games on PC,” “Google Play Protect,” and “Google Kids Space,” to name a few. Google play users were also able to earn a 10X points boost from in-store purchases for a few days.
Originally known as the “Android Market,” and later as the “Google Play Store,” Google Play has evolved from a simple app distribution platform to a digital storefront that also distributes games, movies, TV shows, books, and more. The service is also available on Wear OS wearables, smart TVs, and on computers (via web browser).
