Sonos rolls out Voice Control for its speakers

We had previously heard rumors that Sonos was planning on introducing their own digital assistant to their speakers. The company later confirmed it was true and that it would come in the form of “Voice Control” and that they would pushing it out in June.

The good news is that if you’re a Sonos user living in the US, it appears that Sonos has already started rolling out an update for its speakers where it will now introduce Voice Control support. Basically what this feature does is that whenever users say, “Hey Sonos”, they will be able to control their speakers using their voice.

Right now, it appears that the feature is kind of limited. Users can only use it to control music playback from streaming services like Sonos Radio, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, and Pandora. The company is expected to add support for YouTube Music and Spotify at a later date, but apart from playback control, that’s pretty much the extent of it.

This means that if you were hoping that Voice Control would give your Sonos speakers smart capabilities like you expect from an Amazon Echo or Google Nest device, that doesn’t appear to be the case. It does control your other linked up Sonos speakers to some extent, but that’s it.

Sonos has touted Voice Control as being privacy-focused and processes all commands locally, meaning that unlike Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant requests which are sometimes processed in the cloud, Sonos will not have access to your requests or voice recordings.
