Just because your phone and carrier offers support for 5G, it does not mean that it is necessarily the same 5G that your friend with a different phone on a different carrier has. This is because at the moment, 5G is split into two different variants – mmWave 5G and sub-6GHz.
It is also up to manufacturers to choose chipsets that support either or both forms of 5G, and the good news is that it looks like MediaTek is finally hopping on board the mmWave 5G bandwagon with its latest Dimensity 1050 chipset.
With the Dimensity 1050, the chipset will be able to support both mmWave 5G and sub-6GHz, meaning that it will be able to cater to more networks while also presenting a solution to handset manufacturers who want to be able to cover a wider range of networks and markets around the world.
In addition to support for mmWave, the Dimensity 1050 is also able to power Full HD+ displays with 144Hz refresh rates, support dual HDR video captures that lets users simultaneously record with both their front and rear-facing cameras, boost low-light photos with noise reduction, and also introduces WiFi 6E support with its 2×2 MIMO antenna.
The company does not mention which OEMs will be using its new Dimensity 1050 chipset, but it will be hitting the market in the third quarter of 2022, so we expect we will see handsets that utilize it around that period.
