Qualcomm’s Premium Smartphone Chips Take Market Lead
New data from Counterpoint Research shows significant market performance from Qualcomm for Q1 2022, particularly when it comes to premium chipsets. According to the firm’s findings, Qualcomm’s third consecutive quarterly record revenue for Q1 2022 came in at $11.6 billion, with annual growth between 28% to 61% for its business units.
The report adds that the company’s focus on supplying chipsets for high-end Android devices played a big part in its revenue growth. A lot of this is thanks to the Snapdragon 800 and 700 series chips, which power a lot of premium phones. Statistics also show that 75% of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 shipments are powered by Qualcomm hardware (Samsung usually sells its flagships in both Exynos and Snapdragon variants).
By comparison, competitor MediaTek’s Dimensity 700 and 900 series chips have allowed it to grab top spot in the lower mid-tier smartphone department.
Currently, Qualcomm’s flagship chipset is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is used in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, OnePlus 10 Pro, and Sony Xperia1 IV, for example. There have been reports that the company might soon introduce a faster and more powerful SoC in the form of the 8 Gen 1+, although recent reports say that the launch might be delayed to a later date due to production issues in China.
