Wear OS users can now stream YouTube Music directly on their smartwatches
Our smartwatches rely on our smartphones for a lot of its features, especially if you don’t have one that has LTE connectivity. For example, you would need to be tethered to your phone to receive email or message notifications, answer incoming calls, and also to stream music.
The good news is that if you’re a Wear OS user, that will no longer be necessary if you use YouTube Music. This is because Google has announced an update to the YouTube Music app where Wear OS users can now stream music directly from the app on their smartwatch without needing a connection to their phones.
“We’re excited to share that the YouTube Music app on your Wear OS watch is rolling out two new features. First, starting this week you will be able to stream music over LTE* or WiFi, so you can listen to your favorite playlists wherever you go, even when your phone isn’t nearby.”
This will work on both LTE and WiFi versions of Wear OS smartwatches, although the added advantage of LTE is that it works pretty much anywhere as long as it has a cellular connection, whereas WiFi will be limited to places like your home, office, school or if you’re on a public WiFi network.
Keep in mind that users will still be required to have an active subscription to YouTube Music for this to work, so it’s not as though Google is unlocking the feature for free for everyone, but if you happen to have a subscription, then this is one of the perks you can look forward to.
