Google Pixel 7 will no longer feature the use of soft touch glass

During Google’s I/O 2022 keynote, the company officially released teasers of the Pixel 7 smartphone which is expected to launch later this year. The company had initially stated that the phone is expected to see the return of soft touch glass, but now a tweet by MKBHD says otherwise.

According to the tech YouTuber, he says that Google has confirmed to him that the Pixel 7 will not feature a soft touch glass, despite the company’s initial claims. For those wondering what this means, basically the soft touch glass is the matte glass back found on devices like the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4.

It created a “softer” look to the phone and in some ways, felt nicer to the touch. With Google’s newer Pixel phones, the company has opted for a glossy glass finish on the back. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because the gloss does help the phone stand out, but then again, since most people use cases it doesn’t really make that much of a difference.

Judging from the comments, it seems that some users are a bit upset that Google has gone back on their initial claims. It is unclear if Google had maybe misspoke about the use of soft touch glass and that they were never really planning to do it, or if for some reason there were some last minute design changes.

Either way, the Pixel 7 should be quite an exciting handset to look forward to when it launches later in the year.
