The Nothing Phone (1) is officially coming…

Nothing’s Carl Pei officially introduced the Nothing Phone (1) today during the company’s live stream event. While we would love to show off photos of the new device, in true Nothing fashion, today’s event was more of an official teaser than anything else. In other words, Carl isn’t quite ready to show off the design of the Nothing Phone (1) quite yet. We were told that the device will officially be available during the summer of 2022, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get our first look at the phone. officially

What we do know is that the Nothing Phone (1) will be powered by a Qualcomm chipset (presumably the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) and will run Android with Nothing’s own custom skin on top of it that will use the same simplistic design language that we’ve already seen from the company. The presentation did include visuals from the operating system that showed off Nothing’s unique dot font being used on the lock screen and homescreen and a weather widget with graphics created using the same design elements.

Since no images of the nOthing Phone (1) were provided, we pulled the images of the homescreen over to another device to see what Nothing’s new UI design would look like an actual phone. The placement of the time in the far left corner indicates that the Nothing Phone (1) will not have its selfie camera located in that position. The selfie camera could be located in the middle like that of the Pixel 6 or Nothing could opt for an in-display selfie camera as well.

Carl promised that the Nothing Phone (1) would receive a total of 3 Android OS updates and 4 years of security updates, matching what most other OEMs have been pledging for their flagship-tier devices.

Nothing is also committed to keeping the software on the phone as simple as possible by not duplicating apps on the device or pre-installing bloatware. This means that if Google has an app that they require to be installed on the phone, we shouldn’t find a separate app from Nothing that duplicates its functionality. Besides the graphical customizations of the operating system, the Nothing Phone (1) might be the closest thing you’ll be able to get to a stock Android experience.

While Nothing seems to be putting in a lot of work to deliver a cohesive user experience on its upcoming smartphone, it was also announced that the Nothing launcher will be available for download on select Android devices in April. We’re not exactly sure what devices those will be, but I’m sure there will be quite a few NOthing fans itching to get a feel for what the Nothing software experience will deliver.
