Google could be working to optimize Gboard for larger devices and foldables

Have you ever tried typing on a tablet while you’re holding it like you would a phone, or even in landscape mode? It’s a horrible experience, especially if you’re trying to type like you normally would on a smaller device like a phone, but that could change as far as Gboard is concerned.

According to a report from Android Police, it seems that the latest beta version of Gboard for Android has a new toggle that will allow users to split the keyboard. What this means is that the layout itself will be split into two so that users can type on it easier as the split layout should bring the keys closer to the sides of the device.

This is versus the current Gboard layout that basically stretches a regular keyboard layout across the screen. You would think the larger buttons make it easier to type on, but that’s not necessarily the case, and having the option to split the keyboard is nice to have for those who can appreciate it.

Even when it comes to physical keyboards, there are some layouts that split the keyboard’s keys up that are designed to be more ergonomic, so presumably this will mimic that. This should ultimately make the typing experience a lot better on devices like tablets or even foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

There is no mention of when the feature will be released to the public, but it might be something Gboard fans will want to look out for.
