UGREEN’s 100W USB-C GaN charger is small but mighty

0

If you’ve ever used a laptop, then you know that the power brick that’s part of the laptop’s charger is huge and kind of unwieldy, especially if the cable cannot be detached. What you’re essentially left with is a huge brick in your backpack tangled up in a mess of cables that you have to spend a minute untangling when you need to use it.

Thankfully though, the folks at Ugreen have launched their Nexode 100W charger. This is a charger capable of putting out an impressive 100W while also maintaining it in a small form factor that does not come with an attached cable, making it the perfect travel companion if you need to charge multiple items at once, or devices that might require extra juice.

If that has piqued your interest, then keep reading as we’ll break down some of the specs and features that you can look forward to.

Small Design

Right off the bat, you probably noticed that the Ugreen Nexode charger is smaller than traditional laptop chargers and is roughly around the same size as a smartphone charger. This is because it uses GaN charging technology.

GaN, also known as Gallium Nitride, is starting to become a popular material of choice when it comes to chargers. Right now, for the most part, our smartphone and laptop chargers rely heavily on silicon. There is nothing inherently wrong with silicon, but switching to Gallium Nitride, allows manufacturers to create chargers that are not only more efficient at transferring energy but can also conduct higher voltages, while also being smaller.

This is because GaN chargers require fewer components compared to typical silicon-based chargers, which ultimately means that they are smaller but can pack a bigger punch.

In Ugreen’s case, their Nexode 100W GaN charger measures 2.7 x 2.7 x 1.3-inches, and only weighs around 235grams. It is small enough to fit into your hand and it also comes with foldable prongs so when not in use, you can fold it down into the perfect cube and slip it into a bag or pouch.

Support for Multiple Devices

The Ugreen Nexode 100W charger comes with four ports. Three of those are USB-C while one is a more traditional USB-A port. This means that if you’re looking to charge legacy devices that still use a USB-A cable on one end, you’re covered, but if you have more modern-day devices that use USB-C to USB-C connections, Ugreen’s got your back.

It is also worldwide compatible, according to Ugreen. It is available in plugs designed for the US, EU, and the UK, but we imagine that using it with an adapter for other parts of the world should not be an issue.

Fast and prioritized charging

Two of the USB-C ports, specifically C1 and C2, feature support for PD3.0, PD2.0, PPS, and QC4+, while C3 supports QC3.0, FCP, and SCP. The USB-A port will also come with support for QC3.0, QC2.0, SCP, FCP, AFC, and Apple’s 5V 2.4A, and last but not least, BC1.2. This “all-in-one” design means that regardless of which port you plug it into, you should be able to squeeze out the fastest charging speeds for your devices.

You can also prioritize which devices use which ports, so if some devices don’t need to charge up quite as fast, maybe a Bluetooth speaker, a wireless computer mouse, or wireless headphones, you can opt to use the C3 or A port and maybe reserve C1 and C2 for more energy-intensive devices.

This is because according to Ugreen, the C1 and C2 ports are capable of supporting a max output of 100W, while the C3 and USB-A ports will support a max of 22.5W, so as we said, you can prioritize which ports you need depending on the device you want to charge.

Also, with both the C1 and C2 ports supporting 100W max output, Ugreen actually claims that with its 100W GaN charger, it is actually capable of juicing up two of Apple’s MacBook Pro and Air at the same time, so if you’re out working with a friend or colleague, you only need one power outlet and you’re both covered.

Built with safety in mind

We know that a lot of manufacturers advise that you should only use official accessories with their products, but Ugreen has built some safety mechanisms into place with its Nexode 100W charger. This includes an Over Temperature Protection system that will take five temperature readings every second.

This is to ensure that the charger isn’t overheating which could ultimately lead to your connected devices being damaged. It also uses Ugreen’s Power-X system that can automatically adjust the power output so that it doesn’t damage or harm your device’s battery while it is being charged.

Conclusion

So if you’re looking for a small-sized charger that is capable of juicing up multiple devices at one while charging them at a respectable speed, then perhaps Ugreen’s Nexode 100W charger could be worth taking a look at. It is priced at $79.99 and is available for purchase online. Now get it for just $51.99.
