Google reportedly working on a new Chromecast dongle with Google TV

Google’s Chromecast dongle has been around for a while now. It started off as a way for users to stream content from their mobile devices and computers to a TV that had the Chromecast connected to it, but this evolved where in 2020, Google announced the Chromecast dongle that actually came with Google TV in it.

This meant that users who did not have a smart TV or preferred using Google TV over their manufacturer’s platform, this represents a more affordable alternative to buying a new TV or a set-top box.

It has been a little over a year since Google last unveiled the Chromecast dongle and it looks like they could be working on a successor. This is according to a report from 9to5Google who discovered in an APK that a new device is in the works codenamed “Boreal”. The report claims that based on what they’ve seen, this device is part of the same Sabrina family which is the current Chromecast with Google TV built into it.

Not much is known about this new device at the moment so it is unclear what kind of hardware upgrades or changes we can expect. With the previous model, Google introduced AV1 decoding support, something that users have long been asking for, so we’re not sure how much different the newer model could be. The report claims that Google has plans to launch it this year, so maybe we’ll learn more about it at Google I/O 2022, if not earlier.
