Original Microsoft Surface Duo could get Android 11 update in January 2022

Microsoft first unveiled the Surface Duo smartphone back in 2019, but for some reason only decided to launch it in 2020. The handset was kind of “old” as far as smartphone tech was concerned, and to make matters worse, it still ran on Android 10 despite Android 11 being released in 2020.

The company promised the Android 11 update would arrive by the end of 2021, but seeing as we’re only a couple of days away from the new year, it’s unlikely Microsoft will be able to meet their deadline. The good news is that Surface Duo owners might not have to wait too long.

During the Windows Central Red Ring Visited podcast, it was revealed that the Android 11 update would arrive in January 2022. There was no specific date mentioned, but we suppose at most users would have to wait a month. The podcast also suggests that it might not be Microsoft’s fault that the update is taking this long.

Apparently Microsoft had been working on Android 11 for a while now, but for some reason Google has yet to certify it. We can’t say for sure if this is accurate, but in any case, it looks like users are the ones who end up paying the price. Microsoft has promised that users will get three years of support for the Surface Duo, but with these delays, we’re not necessarily sure if this could amount to three major Android updates.
