Huawei P50 Pocket Promo 1

Huawei’s P50 Pocket arrives to take on the Galaxy Z Flip 3

Despite being available in limited markets, Huawei is still chugging along with new phone releases every once in a while. Huawei and its Mate X2 have largely been considered the biggest competition that Samsung has in the foldable smartphone space. And now, Huawei is taking on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and its smaller form-factor with the Huawei P50 Pocket.

The phone sports a clamshell design, similar to that of Samsung’s Z Flip series. The phone offers a sleek and elegant design, complete with dual circle cutouts on the backside of the phone. The cutout at the top houses the triple camera setup, which is headlined by a 40MP main lens, while being accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP telephoto sensor. But what helps make the P50 Pocket unique is what you’ll find via the second circular cutout.

This cutout acts as Huawei’s Cover Screen, measuring in at 1.04-inches and sporting a 340 x 340 resolution. In addition to giving you a glimpse at the time and your notifications, this Cover Screen can also be used with different widgets, such as being able to view directions or control your music without opening your phone. It really looks more like what you would find on a traditional smartwatch, just slapped onto the back of a phone and placed below the camera module.

The Huawei P50 Pocket features a foldable 6.9-inch display, complete with a variable 120Hz refresh rate and a 2790 x 1188 resolution. It offers a traditional 21:9 aspect ratio, and despite the larger screen and the premium build, it still weighs less and is thinner than Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Powering the P50 Pocket is the 4G variant of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. Huawei is able to use the 4G version due to contingencies surrounding the ongoing trade ban which does not allow the company to use Qualcomm’s 5G technology for its devices. Paired with the Snapdragon 888 4G is 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but if you want more of both, then the P50 Pocket Premium Edition has you covered as it offers 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Providing the juice for Huawei’s new foldable phone is a respectable 4,000mAh battery. It may seem a bit small on paper, but when compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s 3,300mAh cell, it’s quite an improvement. Going even further, you’ll be able to enjoy 40W charging speeds thanks to Huawei SuperCharge technology.

Last but not least, we need to touch on the hinge. Huawei is using a new “multi-dimensional” hinge, which makes it possible for the P50 Pocket to fold and unfold without showing any signs of a crease. Plus, when the phone is folded in half, the hinge ensures that there won’t be a gap, which is important considering that you won’t find any water or dust resistance ratings on the phone.

Huawei is launching the P50 Pocket in China for 8,988 yuan (about $1,410), and it is available beginning today. Those who want more RAM and storage, along with an ultra-premium gold colorway will have to shell out 10,988 yuan (about $1,725) for the P50 Pocket Premium Edition.
