It has been rumored for a while now that Google could be working on their own foldable Pixel phone. The phone was initially rumored to launch alongside the Pixel 6 phones, but that clearly wasn’t the case. Now according to a report from 9to5Google, the phone is reportedly set for a launch in 2022, but Google might compromise on its cameras.
This is based on an APK teardown of the latest version of the Google Camera app, in which they discovered references to the Pixel foldable codenamed “Pipit”. Assuming the data in the APK teardown is accurate, it suggests that the phone could end up using the same camera sensors as last year’s Pixel 5 phones, instead of the new GN1 sensor found in the Pixel 6 series.
Instead, it will apparently use the Sony IMX363 which was found in the Pixel 5 and has been used since the Pixel 3, meaning that while it won’t look terrible, it definitely won’t be on par with 2022’s smartphones in terms of raw quality. The report goes on to add that the phone will also use a 12MP IMX386 sensor that will probably be used for the ultrawide lens, and two 8MP IMX355 sensors, one of which will be used for the front-facing shooter.
To be fair to Google, the company has long made up for its lack of impressive camera hardware with very impressive software. Remember when they managed to mimic portrait mode with only a single camera lens? And let’s not forget Google’s Night Sight definitely helped set a standard for low-light photography.
In any case, we suppose we’ll just have to wait until 2022 to see if these rumors pan out, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
