After Google released the November security patch this week, it marked the end of life for the beloved Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. We all knew this was coming, but it’s easy to forget when Google will finally stop supporting its devices. However, there were hopes that Google would release one final update, after seeing the same thing happen to the Pixel 2 and 2 XL last year.
Thanks to 9to5Google, we now know that the Pixel 3 series will, in fact, get one more update before it’s time to put the phones to rest. There has been no mention as to what the final update could include, as it won’t be part of the Android 12L parade. However, Google confirmed to 9to5 that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL’s final update will arrive in “Q1 of next year”.
Considering that both devices did receive the Android 12 update, complete with Material You, it’s very possible that this final update will offer nothing more than bug fixes and software optimizations. That seems to be the most logical conclusion given that with the Pixel 2 and 2 XL’s final update, Google released it just a month after the phones missed out on the November security patch in 2020.
Next up in the end-of-life list is the Pixel 3a and 3a XL. These devices are currently slated to stop receiving new updates in March of 2022. But we aren’t sure whether these devices will get the final version of Android 12L, as Google has already stated that they aren’t eligible for the upcoming 12L Beta Program.
If you’re holding onto your Pixel 3 or 3 XL and don’t know what phone you should upgrade to, we would recommend checking out the Pixel 5a or the newly-released Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.
