Samsung has been testing the One UI 4 beta on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 in South Korea for a few weeks. Meanwhile, owners of the devices here in the States continue to wait (im)patiently for the beta program to arrive. Well, the wait is finally over, as Samsung surprised everyone early this morning by opening the One UI 4 beta program for Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 owners in the U.S.
The update carries a F711BXXU2ZUJF version number for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and F926BXXU1ZUJF for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and is only accessible through the Samsung Members app. It seems that the beta is only initially available for those using unlocked devices, meaning that if you picked yours up through your carrier, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. We’ve checked on our Galaxy Z Fold 3 from Verizon, and there is no option to join the beta program from within the app, which is just unfortunate.
Nevertheless, the One UI 4 update brings the best that Android 12 has to offer, along with a few extra goodies that Samsung has included. Unlike the Galaxy S21 beta which didn’t include Android 12’s Material You theming engine, the first One UI 4 beta for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 does actually include this. Now, you’ll be able to set a wallpaper and have your entire interface themed and matching accordingly. And even though Google has icon theming labeled as a beta, this feature is also now available with the One UI 4 beta on Galaxy devices.
But as a reminder, this is still a beta, so you’ll want to proceed with caution before just slapping the update onto your foldable phone. Some users are already reporting that the first One UI 4 beta is breaking the 120Hz refresh rate found on the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s Cover Screen, leaving it stuck at 60Hz instead. Samsung has already acknowledged the issue and will provide a fix in an upcoming update.
