Google is already working on the Pixel 7’s processor

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro mark one of the biggest shifts in hardware that we’ve ever seen from Google. It’s almost as big of a change as when the company moved from its Nexus devices to the Pixel. That’s because thanks to the Google Tensor chip, the company now has more control over its hardware and software, similar to what Apple has with the iPhone and Samsung with its Exynos chips.

But according to 9to5Google, the company isn’t lifting its foot off the gas just yet. References to “Cloudripper” have recently been found, and this is expected to be the “developer board” that could be used with the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro. The basis for this assumption comes after seeing similar references in code to “Slider” with the Pixel 6 series.

Additionally, 9to5Google has viewed documents that show this Cloudripper being connected to a GS201. Considering that the Google Tensor chip features a GS101 codename, it’s a logical conclusion to think that the GS201 is the next iteration of the Tensor chip.

This discovery was then backed up by Mishaal Rahman, who found references to GS201 in the recent Android kernel source. Unfortunately, there has been no indication as to what kind of hardware or performance improvements would be provided by the Pixel 7. And all of this is pretty expected if Google really plans to gain a foothold in the smartphone market.

If anything, this is just providing a bit of comfort that Google is actually taking things seriously and is working on development of its next device. Hopefully by this time next year, we won’t have so many issues in supply, and you’ll actually be able to get your hands on the device on day one.
