Android 12 “stable” beta is bricking some Xiaomi Mi 11 phones
Usually when it comes to software rollouts, companies release a beta version for the public or select testers to try. The idea is that by expanding the number of testers, they might be able to find bugs and issues faster and fix them ahead of the final release, but there is a risk to beta testers in which software doesn’t always work as it should.
Unfortunately for some Xiaomi Mi 11 who took part in the company’s “stable” Android 12 beta, they have been reporting that their devices have been bricked as a result. This affected users who installed assembly numbers “V12.5.1.0.SKBMIXM”, “V12.5.1.0.SKKMIXM”, and “V12.5.1.0.SKAMIXM” on devices like the Xiaomi Mi 11, Mi 11i and Mi 11 Ultra.
Thankfully though, a trip to the service center does fix the problem, but we suppose until then their devices are now just pricey paperweights. To be fair to Xiaomi though, the company did warn beta testers of potential risks that come with the update, so while it’s obviously a bad thing devices got bricked and the inconvenience it caused, we suppose we can’t say we’re too shocked.
It is unclear how widespread this bricking issue is, but for now it seems to be limited to the Mi 11 series, but either way if you were thinking about joining Xiaomi’s beta program for Android 12, either do so on a device you aren’t using as a daily driver or maybe sit this one out.
