Google begins rolling out YouTube Music app to older Wear OS smartwatches

0

When Google debuted the new Wear OS 3 at I/O 2021, it also announced that a variety of its own apps would be updated and released. This included the likes of YouTube Music, but until now, you had to own a Wear OS 3 smartwatch in order to enjoy it. As we’ve covered previously, the only smartwatch powered by Wear OS 3 remains the Galaxy Watch 4.

However, if you’re a YouTube Music user and have been wanting to use the Wear OS app, you’re in luck. According to The Verge, Google has confirmed that the new app is now rolling out to the following smartwatches:

  • Fossil Gen 6
  • Michael Kors Gen 6
  • Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS
  • Mobvoi TicWatch E3

Additionally, Google confirmed that it will begin rolling out the new YouTube Music app to other Wear OS 2 smartwatches sometime “later this year.”

In addition to actually getting a solid app for YouTube Music, once it arrives, Premium subscribers are able to download songs for offline listening. This is one of those features that we expect to see from all of the music streaming services, as Spotify has also recently updated its Wear OS app with support for offline playback. But unlike YouTube Music, you can get this update now on smartwatches running Wear OS 2.0 and up.

The decision for Google to bring the YouTube Music app to older smartwatches is a great move, considering that Google Play Music is gone for good. Now, we just have to wait for it to become available to download on our smartwatches before we can jump in and enjoy all of our tunes, even our phones are left behind.
