Now that Wear OS 3 is technically available, we’re seeing more and more Google apps updated to follow the design guidelines. The latest of which is Google Messages for Wear OS, and with it, we’re seeing a design that falls in line with Android 12 and other Wear OS apps.
Gone is the blue background that you have come to know and love, in favor of a truly black background. Rounded corners and soft edges are found throughout the different UI elements, including the quick responses, shortcuts.

While it’s great to see Google push a new update to another one of its apps, this one is particularly special. Instead of being limited to arriving only on the new Galaxy Watch 4 series, Android Central has shared that the new UI is available on older hardware. For example, the updated app has appeared on the TicWatch E3 and Fossil Gen 5, coming via version number 9.2.030. In fact, we’re still awaiting the arrival of this update on our own Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.
It’s only a matter of time before the Messages update rolls out to more users. App developers have a tendency of releasing updates in waves in order to make sure that everything is working properly before putting into the hands of more users. So this comes as really no surprise.
Let us know if you’ve received the update on your Wear OS smartwatch, and whether there are any other new features besides the new design.
