While we await the arrival of the Pixel 5a and Samsung’s next lineup of foldable phones, Google decided to just surprise everyone on this fine Monday. The company has confirmed that the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are coming this Fall, along with featuring the Google Tensor processor. This is the rumored Whitechapel chipset that we have heard about for a few months, and is Google’s first custom-designed processor.
This Google Tensor processor has been in the works for at least four years, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. By creating its own SoC, Google is able to provide the best AI and machine learning along with pairing it with Android 12 for a powerful combination.
By designing its own processor, Google will now have the same level of “total” control over its hardware that we see from the likes of Apple and Samsung. As for security, Tensor has a “new security core” along with the Titan M2 chip which is said to “have the most layers of hardware security in any phone”.
Along with confirming that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are real and coming this Fall, Google decided to just give everyone a look at both devices while sharing some other key specs. The Pixel 6 Pro will feature a total of three cameras, “including a telephoto lens with a 4x optical zoom”. The Pixel 6 will use two of the three 6 Pro cameras, as Google decided to forgo the telephoto lens on the standard Pixel 6.
It seems that Jon Prosser was right with his major Pixel 6 leak a few months back, as Google is moving to an “industrial design”, that is reminiscent of the Huawei-built Nexus 6P. Google provides a bit of reason as to why the camera bar stands so far out from the rest of the design:
The improved sensors and lenses are now too big to fit into the traditional square — so the new design gives the whole camera system a new home with the camera bar.
And as for the body itself, the Pixel 6 Pro will use a “light polished aluminum frame”, while the Pixel 6 uses a “matte aluminum finish”.
Both phones will come in three different color combinations, although they aren’t same across both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 will come in orange, green, and black, while the Pixel 6 Pro comes in a yellow/orange combination, silver, and black.
Material You will be best on #Pixel6.
The colors, the camera, the form, and what’s on the screen all work together in a single, fluid experience.

In this announcement, Google also proceeded to give us a bit more of a taste when it comes to Android 12 and Material You. Google claims that because of the new Tensor chip, “everything runs smoothly, and feels more natural than what you are used to on Pixel phones and Android in general.
While Google went all Pixel 4 on its upcoming devices, the company stopped short of sharing all of the details. We’ll have to wait until the officially unveiling this fall for “new features” along with the rest of the specs, pricing, and availability. Although there’s no other information available, you can head over to the Google Store and “sign up” to be notified as soon as more Pixel 6 information is made available.
Let us know what you think about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro and if you’re as excited as we are for them to arrive.
