If you’ve been impatiently awaiting the arrival of the latest Android 12 beta, the wait is finally over. Google has released Android 12 Beta 3, as we get closer and closer to the final launch, expected in September. So what’s new in the latest beta? Well, one of the most requested features that Android users have been asking for — Scrolling Screenshots.
Scrolling screenshots
You can ditch using third-party solutions, as Google has integrated scrolling screenshots natively into Android 12 Beta 3. This is a feature that we’ve seen in past beta releases for previous Android versions, along with being made available through skins like One UI and OxygenOS.
With the latest update, a new “Capture more” button will appear in the bottom right corner. Tapping it will extend the screenshot as far as it can possibly go. Then, you’ll be able to just crop, edit, or mark up the screenshot before saving it or sending it off.
On-device search
Another new feature in Beta 3 is on-device search. Google has introduced a “high-performance on-device search engine”. This essentially allows you to search for results from within other applications, or on the device itself. We’ll have to play around with this more, but the APIs have been introduced so developers can start integrating them.
Auto-rotate improvements
In an effort to improve the speed of your Android 12 device, Google has also introduced faster auto-rotate. Instead of only relying on the accelerometer in your phone, Android 12 will now also make use of the front-facing camera. This will be used to detect the orientation of the device, and uses Google’s “Private Compute Core”.
By making use of the PCC, your phone will rotate up to 25% faster, while also improving the experience for those who use their phones on a couch or in bed. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available across all Android 12-compatible Pixel phones, as it’s only found on the Pixel 4 or newer.
Game Mode API
Earlier in the week, Google detailed some of the changes coming to Android 12 designed with mobile gamers in mind. With Beta 3, the new Game Mode APIs are being made available, allowing developers to “optimize gameplay by prioritizing characteristics, such as performance or battery life based on users settings or game specific configurations.”
