Late last year, Twitter introduced a new feature aimed at taking on Snapchat and Instagram. Fleets provided a quick and easy way to share things with your Twitter followers, just like Stories on other platforms. But less than a year later, Twitter is pulling the plug.
We had big hopes for Fleets, but now it’s time to say goodbye and take flight with other ideas. Starting August 3, Fleets will no longer be available.

In the blog post, Twitter confirmed that Fleets will no longer be available as of August 3rd. Moving forward, users will only see active Twitter Spaces at the top of the app instead of Fleets.
Fleets was an “experiment” trying to get Twitter users to use the platform more, as Twitter battles Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and other platforms. For example, Spaces has been another experiment rivaling that of Clubhouse with rooms for like-minded users to have conversations, while followers can listen in.
Most Fleets include media – people enjoy quickly sharing photos and videos to add to the discussion on Twitter. Soon, we’ll test updates to the Tweet composer and camera to incorporate features from the Fleets composer – like the full-screen camera, text formatting options, and GIF stickers.
It’s a bit disappointing to see Fleets removed so quickly after it was launched. However, it just goes to show that Twitter is trying to evolve and figure out how to improve the overall experience with different features.
Sometimes it works, but sometimes you just need to pull the plug on a feature that clearly isn’t working. It will be interesting to see what’s to come from the Twitter camp in the future.
