In the past, there have been attempts to upstage iOS and Android as a potentially new smartphone operating system, but unfortunately many have tried and failed. Will Huawei succeed where others haven’t? Maybe, because according to the company, it seems that HarmonyOS 2.0 has over 10 million users registered in China.
That is certainly a very impressive feat, and could help Huawei gain the traction they need to help create a true alternative to iOS and Android. At the same time, there are several things to consider when looking at these figures.
For starters, in China where most (if not all) of Google’s services are blocked, it’s not users have that much of a choice anyway. Secondly, Huawei’s intention for HarmonyOS is to be more than just a platform for smartphones and that they want to use it for smart devices like wearables and TVs and more.
This means that the 10 million figure comprises more than just smartphone users, so we have no idea exactly how many mobile devices are actually using it. Huawei does plan to eventually bring HarmonyOS outside of China with its upcoming P50 smartphones so it will be interesting to see how well-received it will be in an international setting.
But what do you think? Do you think that HarmonyOS, with Huawei’s backing, reputation, and resources, have what it takes to pose as a true challenger to iOS and Android?
