Xiaomi has been taken off the US government’s blocklist

As many of you are aware, the US government’s relationship with China isn’t so hot. This has resulted in several escalations in tensions, like in business where the US government placed Huawei on its Entity List, effectively preventing them from doing business with US companies and companies that use US technology.

It seems that Xiaomi has narrowly avoided a similar fate because the US government has since removed them from its blocklist and also its designation as a Communist Chinese Military Company. This is no doubt a huge victory for Xiaomi who is recognized as the world’s third largest smartphone maker, so being on the blocklist would have definitely had a negative impact on them.

That being said, it should be noted that Huawei and Xiaomi’s positions are a bit different from each other. Huawei is on both the Entity List by the Department of Commerce and the Communist Chinese Military Companies list by the Department of Defense. This is versus Xiaomi which was only on the Communist Chinese Military Companies, but who’s to say it wouldn’t have eventually escalated to the Entity List as well.

Huawei used to reign as the world’s largest smartphone maker but they have since lost their crown. They are working on their new phones that will ship with HarmonyOS that will challenge Google’s Android, but only time will tell if they will be able to make a difference.
