Many are curiously anticipating Huawei’s launch of its HarmonyOS platform, the company’s answer to Google’s Android in a current landscape in which they are banned from doing business with US companies. It turns out we won’t have to wait much longer to find out what’s hiding under the hood.
Huawei has confirmed that they will be hosting an event on the 2nd of June at 8AM ET where HarmonyOS will be officially launched. Not much is known about the event right now or what kind of launch details we are looking at, such as whether or not HarmonyOS will be launched worldwide or if it could be limited to just China.
It is also unclear if this event will see Huawei launch new smartphones, like its flagship Huawei P50 series which still has yet to be officially announced. We have heard rumors that the P50 could be the first Huawei phone to run HarmonyOS right out of the box, but other rumors have claimed that Huawei could launch the phone in both Android and HarmonyOS variants, presumably for different markets.
It will be interesting to see how HarmonyOS will differ from Android and how much of a threat it could be to the current ecosystem. Right now, iOS and Android more or less dominate the smartphone scene, but Huawei has the resources and reach to potentially challenge the status quo, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
