After years, Sony’s Xperia division is finally profitable

Sony used to be one of the major players in the smartphone scene early in the day, but over time, they were replaced and overtaken by other companies. These days, the company has been rather quiet with their smartphone launches, releasing a phone every now and then without much fanfare.

Some might even question that at this point, should Sony just up and quit completely? Turns out that not quitting was a good decision on Sony’s part. This is because according to Sony’s latest earnings, it has been revealed that for the first time in years, the company’s Xperia division has actually made a profit.

Now, before you get too excited, one of the reasons why the company is now seeing a profit is because essentially they’re making less phones than before, which means lower operational costs. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Sony’s phones are seeing a surge in popularity for no reason, but it is still a good sign for the company.

What they plan to do from here on out remains to be seen. We imagine that if they keep doing what they’re doing, they might be able to maintain their profits, or maybe they could reinvest those profits into newer and better phones, we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, not everyone from the good old days is enjoying the same success as Sony has.

One of the OGs from the early days, LG, has recently announced that they will be exiting the smartphone market.
