Google’s Pixel 6 could sport an in-display fingerprint scanner

Yesterday saw the release of Android 12 Developer Preview 2, and with the release, that means folks like Mishaal Rahman over at XDA Developers has had time to dive deeper into the source code. Rahman was one of the first to reveal the various visual changes that are hidden by flags in the first Developer Preview, and he’s back with some more fun.

As it would appear, Google could very-likely be working on an unannounced Pixel device that features an in-display fingerprint scanner. According to the source code, there are some new classes within the SystemUIGoogle app. One of these classes is called “UdfpsControllerGoogle” and that may seem like a bunch of nonsense. But “Udfps” refers to “Under-display fingerprint scanner”.

One could surmise that Google is simply on working to bring a better experience for devices that are already available with this type of fingerprint scanner, as Google’s current lineup relies on rear-mounted scanners. However, Rahman points out the following:

These new Udfps classes are part of the com.google.android.systemui path rather than com.android.systemui, suggesting that these classes are being developed for Pixel phones rather than AOSP.

It would come as no surprise for Google to potentially release the Pixel 6 with an in-display fingerprint scanner, as this seems to be the trend for most smartphones moving forward. This is especially true with the 2nd-generation Qualcomm scanner that can be found in the Galaxy S21 line which recognizes scans much faster than the original iteration.

We also know that this won’t be coming to the Pixel 5a, as the leaks have pretty much shown that the 5a is practically nothing more than a newer version of last year’s Pixel 4a 5G. But the Pixel 6 likely won’t be unveiled until this Fall, either shortly after or right around the time that Android 12 is ready for primetime and made available to the masses.
