Now, more than ever, there’s a good chance that you may be looking at buying a new desk. While office furniture may typically not be a high priority on people’s “must-have” lists, a good setup for studying, getting work done or even gaming is something we’re all thinking about more than we typically do. If you’re among the millions who typically commute to work for a day job, there’s a good chance that you’ve found yourself working at your kitchen table or couch this past year as more and more employers have allowed remote work.
While a kitchen table can work in a pinch, a proper desk is a better option. But if you want the best option, a standing desk is the way to go.
About a week ago, the new Flexispot Comhar Standing Desk was swapped in as a replacement for my daughter’s small Ikea desk in her room. Her previous desk was functional and she loved using it for writing and for storage, but it quickly became too cramped when her school switched to remote learning last year. With the laptop, books and notebooks she needed for her school work, the kitchen table was a much better option.
Assembling the Flexispot Comhar All-in-One Standing Desk is incredibly simple. The legs attach to the desk with eight screws and then the feet attach to the bottom of the left with eight more screws. After that, you simply plug the motor cable into the control panel on the underside of the desk and then plug in the main cable to the wall. The entire assembly process from opening the box to plugging it in takes less than 10 minutes.
The standing desk can definitely be assembled by one person without any issues, but if you’re carrying the box upstairs or simply trying to get it inside the house from your front step, you may want some help. The box is quite big and with the glass top, ours weighed more than 100 lbs.
On its own, the Flexispot Comhar Standing Desk was a big upgrade for my daughter simply due to the vast work area. The glass top measures 48-inches wide by 24-inches deep, allowing ample room for a laptop or even a desktop computer, books, papers and Lego castle as well without feeling cramped. The frosted glass finish is quite durable and hasn’t suffered any scratches yet, but it does pick up fingerprints quite easily that are visible under bright lighting conditions. I recommend storing a microfiber cloth in the drawer under the desk to wipe things down when needed.
Since glass isn’t the ideal material for a mouse, picking up a nice mousepad is definitely recommended. The other option is to buy the Comhar Standing Desk with the wood finish which looks nice as well.
Now, a desk drawer isn’t something most people will get excited about, but it’s this addition that rarely makes an appearance in a standing desk. The width of the drawer is roughly half that of the desk, but it’s only a little more than an inch deep. So far, it’s mainly being used for notebooks, pens and pencils, but it can be used to store your laptop as well.
Of course, the main attraction of the Flexispot Comhar All-in-One Standing Desk is its ability to adjust to different heights. It can be used as a regular desk and then transform into a standing desk with a quick press of a button. The height adjustment controls are on the right edge of the desk with simple up and down arrows and three different customizable preset buttons. The desk also features a small display that shows the current height of the desk and a lock button that will ensure the desk doesn’t change heights if you accidentally press one of the other buttons.
Another safety feature that Flexispot has added is the anti-collision function. If the motor senses resistance while changing heights, it will automatically turn off in an effort to avoid damaging any furniture or object that has been placed under it inadvertently. Overall, the desk allows for adjustment between 28.3″ and 47.6″ with 110 lbs of lifting capacity.
In addition to the drawer, one feature that the Flexispot Comhar Standing Desk offers that I haven’t seen on many other standing desks is the inclusion of three USB ports (2 USB-A and one USB-C) for charging your devices. Since we all have our smartphones, tablets and headphones that constantly need to be charged, it’s nice to have the ports available on the desk without needing to plug things into the outlet on the wall. My one recommendation would be to add some additional ports on the backside of the desk so that users don’t have to deal with cables dangling off the front of their desk. Flexispot could have also taken it one step further and offered built-in wireless charging, but that will likely come in a year or two on the next model.
Flexispot could have put a bit more effort into proper cable management. There are a few cutouts in the frame so that the wires for the motor can pass through, but it would have been nice if there were channels or clips built into the legs so that you could easily hide the black power cable as it runs from the desk to the power outlet on the wall. They do offer a cable management tray add-on for $25, but that seems unnecessary when paying this much for a desk.
The Flexispot Comhar All-in-One Standing Desk with the glass top is currently selling for $429.99, roughly the same price that other motorized standing desks are selling for. Opting for the wood top finish will cost you $389.99. The difference here is that you get a built-in drawer and USB charging ports, two features that the competition doesn’t offer. Flexispot also has a handful of cheaper options as well with a variety of sizes and different styles.
Having a larger workspace has definitely made a big difference for my daughter, but the smart features offered by the Flexispot Comhar Standing Desk are definitely what sets this desk apart from her old one. She now uses the desk for 5-6 hours a days for her school work, switching between sitting and standing to help pass the time faster. She also uses the USB charging ports daily to keep her phone topped off, though it would be nice if they delivered enough power to charge a laptop.
I’m quite happy with the desk and have even caught my wife using it a few times since she doesn’t have a dedicated workspace of her own.
If you’re looking for a standing desk, I definitely recommend taking a look at the Flexispot Comhar All-in-One Standing Desk.
